We've been very strict on Veg's diet and other triggers regarding his Abdominal Migraine and recent head migraines. We discovered they weren't all food related and have been cautious with activity etc. (flashing movies, lights, things like that) But mostly food.....
Well... we've made it several months with out any episodes. So we (or I) had hoped he was beginning to outgrow this problem.... Or maybe we really had nailed down the triggers and were lucky to keep avoiding them. I know his school has been more cautious this year as well.
Then about a month ago, he threw a fit because I wouldn't let him have a Tootsie Roll... We talked about the ingredients and the reasons and he didn't back down this time (usually he does) So I finally told him that the next time I saw a small tootsie roll, we would buy it and he could see for himself how it made him feel.
Last weekend he used his arcade tickets to buy a tootsie roll... A Single little tootsie roll... He ate it and loved it....Until 6am that is..."Mom, Mooooooommmm" this was my wake up. Only this time there was no screaming in pain, he calmly said he needed a shower. And I asked if everything was OK (its Odd for him to ask for a shower at 6am)... he says very calmly...
"Well, I think I'm about to be messy"... and then WHAMMY!!!! Up came the results of the tootsie roll on him and the bed.... WHAT HAPPENED TO THE BUCKET..... HE ALWAYS USES THE BUCKET!!
Anyway... he was so sad... "I'm never going to eat again, I hate throwing up, I'll never touch another tootsie roll"
Good thing for him the Tootsie roll isn't a major food group. Bad news is, he hasn't outgrown this lovely inheritance like we hoped... Good news is, the episode only lasted about an hour (instead of 3) and except for being sad and upset, he didn't seem to be in any pain this time... after showering then sleeping it off, he woke up fine and dandy.
So all in all it wasn't sooo bad!! And now we know that we should continue being careful with his triggers... I'm so grateful to have some ability to control this. I can't imagine parents that deal with it every day and don't know the cause.

Who knew one little Tootsie Roll could wreak so much havoc? Poor guy! I'm glad it wasn't as bad this time though.
